Past the Fourth Item
Dickinson is a bayou town of a little over 20,000 people. This page is for three kinds of household. One has a garage or backyard shed that got ahead of them. One is partway through a remodel or rebuild with nowhere to put the debris. One just cleared out a house and the city's trucks will not take what is left. All three have a volume problem, and the trash service is built for a normal week.
What the District Picks Up, and What It Will Not
Per the city's page, as of October 2026, the Galveston County water district contracts with AmeriWaste Solutions, and every home and business in the district or the city limits has to use them. The details sit in the district's garbage guidelines, last updated January 2024.
The Cart Plus Four
Everything goes in the 96-gallon cart. Beside it, any four items, mixed however you like, of bundled waste, bagged yard waste and heavy trash get picked up.
What Counts
Bundles under five feet long, 18 inches across and 50 pounds. Heavy trash is anything too big for the cart, like furniture and household appliances. Fridges and freezers need a tag saying the refrigerant is out.
What Never Goes Out
TVs, computers, monitors, microwaves, paint, tires, motor oil, pool chemicals and cooking oil. The guidelines say not to put them out at all.
Pickup comes twice a week by zone, per the district's route map. The green waste sheet caps a pickup at four bags or four bundles, and it points anything that does not fit to a special pickup through AmeriWaste.
One gap: neither the city's page nor the guidelines mention remodel or demolition debris, and we could not find a published rule saying drywall, flooring or tile gets taken. Before you stack a gutted kitchen at the curb, ask AmeriWaste at 281-585-3200. If the answer is no, call us.
When Hiring a Crew Is the Quicker Way
Count what you want gone. If it comes to more than four things, or one is on the refused list, or it is the contents of a whole room, a crew beats stretching it across a month of pickups.
The refused list has a free answer nearby. District residential customers can take paint, chemicals, electronics and appliances to the Stella Roberts Recycling Center on Magnolia Parkway in Pearland, with a water bill and photo ID, per the district's October 2025 flyer. We can usually take TVs, monitors and microwaves in a load, but not wet paint, chemicals, motor oil, propane or fuel.
A pile can also become its own problem. Seven months after Harvey, ABC13 reported the city giving about 60 households 30 days to clear leftover debris and flooded vehicles. We cannot say what is enforced today, but a pile that sits for weeks draws attention.
Bay Colony, the Old Streets and the Bayou
Out west near I-45, Bay Colony and Bayou Lakes are the big master-planned neighborhoods. Bay Colony runs through a master association with sub-associations, among them The Lakes, Bay Colony Pointe, The Meadows and The Enclave, so read your own covenants before anything sits outside. Bayou Lakes has resale homes from the 2000s and 2010s beside new construction. Newer houses mean real garages and attics, and that is where the clutter lands.
Closer to Highway 3 and FM 517 is the old part of town. Dickinson was berry country, and the Texas State Historical Association says it became known as the Strawberry Capital of the World in the early 1900s. Neighborhoods like Moore's Addition date to the late 1800s. Older lots tend to bring detached garages, sheds and decades of stored things.
Then there is the bayou. Around Old Bayou Drive and Country Club Estates, lots run larger, many have no HOA, and decking, dock boards and fence lines pile up. We do not go in the water and we cannot take chemically treated marine timber, so tell us up front if that is what you are pulling out.
Still Sorting Through 2017?
Harvey stalled over the area in August 2017, and the state historical association puts the rain in Dickinson at about 51 inches. ABC13 reported five years later that about 80 percent of the city had flooded, some 7,000 structures. In 2020 the state announced Harvey funds for about 49 buyouts and 50 home acquisitions in the city's flood-prone areas.
