Ditch Streets, Curb Streets, and Your Driveway
Settle where the can will stand before you settle anything else. About three homes in four in Dickinson are detached single-family houses, per Census Bureau figures for 2020 through 2024, so most cans go on a driveway. Pace yours off. We need a 14 by 7 foot patch of firm ground, a straight approach for the trailer, and nothing hanging overhead. You do not need to be home. Tell us the spot and we lay boards under the can.
The street is another matter, and Dickinson has nothing in writing about it. We searched the city's ordinances on Municode for dumpster, roll-off, and container, and found no permit, fee, or form for a rented can. The only dumpster rule sits in the fire chapter and is aimed at businesses: at a commercial site, the dumpster stays 5 feet off the building unless the fire marshal signs off in writing. The separate zoning code is one we could not search, and the city's permit page says nothing about dumpsters, so we will not call the street fine. If the driveway will not work, phone Community Development (281-337-2489), the number on that permit page, before you book.
Not every Dickinson street has a curb. The city's drainage criteria send pavement without curb and gutter to roadside open ditches, and another section of the code bars putting anything in a street, alley, or gutter where it blocks the flow of water. A can has no business over a ditch, over a culvert opening, or on a soft shoulder. Loaded, it is heavy, and wet ground gives way. Describe your frontage when you book, or send a photo.
This was berry and farm country before it was a suburb, and some lots are still big. The city's driveway rule asks for four inches of reinforced concrete but exempts lots of an acre or more, so yours may be gravel or an old thin slab. Either works if it is firm.
Shops along Highway 3 and FM 517 have a lot instead of a drive. Leave 5 feet to the building, name it when you book, and clear it with the landlord first.
A Town Mostly Built Before 1990
Dickinson has roughly 8,300 homes by the Census Bureau's count, and half of them date from 1986 or earlier. The 1970s are the biggest decade, about 2,200 houses, and roughly 2,750 more went up after 2000, about a third of the city. A house from the 1970s or 1980s is at the age where the roof, the floors, the fence and the kitchen tend to come due at once.
- Roofs. Shingles weigh more than they look. Text or call first and we will tell you how high to fill.
- Fences, sheds, and decks. A privacy fence on its way out is awkward to carry and takes more room than you expect.
- Kitchen, bath and floor tear-outs. A single bathroom fits the 14-yard. Take the 20-yard when a kitchen and its adjoining floors come out together.
- Move-outs. About 28 percent of households rent, and about one home in six is in a building with two or more units. A tenant change usually leaves something behind to clear.
- Garages, attics, and storm limbs. Newer subdivisions have real garages, and a big hurricane-season trim outgrows a four-bundle pickup.

Gut work and whole-floor pulls. The height is the whole upgrade.
Match the term to the work. A weekend covers a fence line or a shed if you have helpers. Three days suit a bathroom, a single floor, or a kitchen in the bigger can. Book all seven days for a roof tear-off or a whole-house gut. Added days are $50 each when the can is not already promised to the next customer, which it often is, so lean toward the longer term.

Bay Colony, Bayou Lakes, and the Clock on Your Driveway
The master-planned neighborhoods answer to associations, and Bay Colony has layers of them. The master association's community site lists sub-associations including The Lakes, The Meadows, The Enclave, and Bay Colony Pointe, run by several different management companies, and it says architectural requests go to your sub-association's manager, not to the master association. Bayou Lakes is newer, with Lennar marketing homes there, and its community page shows an HOA line too.
We cannot read your deed restrictions, and the rules on containers and remodel debris change from one section to the next. Look for two answers: does a temporary container need approval, and how many days may it stay? Then tell us the window.

Gutting, Raising, and the Flood Years
Harvey is still in the housing stock. The Handbook of Texas records 51 inches of rain on Dickinson in August 2017 and reports that 80 percent of Dickinson homes took damage. City crews hauled about 170,000 cubic yards in three passes and then ended pickup in November 2017. ABC13 reported at the time that debris removal then became the residents' job.
In mapped flood zones, the flood article in the city code puts new construction and any substantial improvement, meaning work that costs half or more of the house's market value, at least 18 inches above base flood elevation. That is how a gut job becomes a lift, and a lift outlasts a weekend. The article also requires a development permit and defines development to include storing equipment or materials. It never mentions dumpsters, so we cannot say a rented can on a flood-zone lot needs one, and we cannot say it does not. Ask Community Development when you call about the permit for the work itself.

What Curbside Pickup Takes, and Where It Stops
Curbside trash in Dickinson runs through the water district, Galveston County WCID No. 1, which bills for it and uses AmeriWaste as its collector. The district's garbage guidelines, updated in January 2024, describe a 96-gallon cart emptied twice a week plus four extra items in any mix: a bundle of limbs, a bag of clippings, a chair. Yard waste tops out at four bags and four bundles. TVs, computers, microwaves, paint, tires, motor oil, and pool chemicals are never picked up. The city's trash page has the contact numbers.
None of these pages says a word about construction. We found nothing on remodel, roofing, or demolition debris. Ask AmeriWaste at 281-585-3200 before any drywall or shingles go out to the curb. If the answer is no, or the pile is past a handful of items, a can makes sense. It takes the whole job in one visit and leaves nothing at the street.
